Integration ` Motivation ` Commitment ` Growth
Shiyu Zhu 16’ SFLS

Dear officers, honorable senior supervisors of Special Olympics,

I am honored to be here, representing Shanghai Foreign Language School, to introduce to you our work and efforts as a school integrated with Special Olympics. As a volunteer of the integration program, I would also like to prove to you what profound influence it has brought to us and our growth.

Shanghai Foreign Language School was selected as a school with the Special Olympics integration program due to great importance given to Special Olympics by school’s leadership, and due to trust in my school granted by Special Olympics East Asia Region especially its Shanghai Office. My school thus becomes Mainland China’s only candidate middle school to nominate volunteers for the 2015 Los Angeles Special Olympic Games.

In the last year, Shanghai Foreign Language School has worked hand-in-hand with two local schools of special education featuring integration of Special Olympics. The two schools are Changning Secondary Vocational School and Zhabei Qihui School. According to school released figures, around 300 students have participated in relevant activities. They did far better than expected. They were skilled in handicraft, talented in painting. What was more, they always wanted to try their utmost rather than give up. Each time when a session was done, we were so reluctant to say goodbye, and looked forward to the next encounter with real passion. It was our firm belief that they were gifted with great potentials, which only awaits us and the society to discover and encourage.

Roses given, fragrance remains
I would like to quote this to share with you what I have learned and how I feel --- Roses given, fragrance remains. That is more or less the literal expression, and I believe it really means that helping others is helping oneself. We have got so much while giving. Working with students from special education schools, we have undergone a typical change of attitude. At first, there was somehow sadness and mercy, frankly speaking, but then we were moved and empowered by them, which accelerated personal growth, and eventually, all turned into responsibility, which will be very helpful for future elites.

Strongly motivated
In those integration activities, our new friends taught us lessons like perseverance, courage, ego-challenging, and they made us more determined to be qualified volunteers. Every volunteer was given chances to make close conversation with our partner and we learned a lot from hearing their stories of growing up. Sometimes I just could not imagine how they made it to perform on stage, either riding one-wheel bicycle or playing Kongfu. He said that in the hardest of the times, there were blisters on his feet, with skin worn out, and for quite a while, it was painful for him even to stand still. Yet, here is what he insisted: “I am fine. I will make it.”

Enhancing commitment
It was fate with Special Olympics and affection to the mentally challenged people that enhanced our sense of commitment. It was during the integration activities that I knew the real essence of Special Olympics and appreciated the great mission of the Special Olympics International. The goal is to provide mentally challenged people with equal opportunities to involve in social life, to demonstrate skills and talents, to promote public acknowledgement of their capabilities and demands, and to help them contribute to society and acquire respect and acceptance. Therefore, I would like further participate in these and ask more people to do the same. Mentally challenged people are part of our big family; they deserve a life with dignity and brilliance. I think similar stories also happened on every volunteer of my school. Our involvement and resolution in joining the program has also affected people around us in the society. Our parents started to change their opinions, and more friends became eager to join us after hearing our story.

Accelerating growth
Needless to say, we benefited greatly from the integration activities of Special Olympics. As a student, I have learned so much that cannot be taught in class, such as understanding of life, observation and reflection on a wide range of social issues and phenomena. Through all these, we can now care and look after other people from an adult’s perspective. Seeing the smiling faces of our friends at special education schools, we are always touched and whole-heartedly pleased. These experiences have helped accelerate us to grow fast.

Before long, the 2015 Summer Special Olympic Games are going to be held in Los Angeles, with over 7000 athletes from more than 170 countries and regions competing on the same stage. For about ten volunteers from Shanghai Foreign Language School, it will be a new arena as well, where we will perform our best in high spirits with excellent help and assistance to facilitate athletes to achieve their dreams.

Thank you.

.
